2003 National Championship

Maraetai Sailing Club hosted the 2003 nationals in ideal sailing conditions. A seven race series was planned and courses well laid. The first day racing in 15-20 knots from the Easterly quarter saw Defending Champion Mark Winters and Shirley Andrews sailing Weapon, winning the first and third races with Roger Hall sailing Peppermint Planet winning the second and fourth races. Clint Rennie with the best looking crew in the fleet sailing Dry Reach gained an impressive second in race two ,with newcomers Andrew and Kathy Mc Ewan sailing Sublime showing up close to the front at times
The second day saw slightly lighter conditions which suited single hander Hall who won three straight races and the title. Winters/Andrews strung together three second places to clinch the runners up spot, with the most impressive performance of the regatta coming from Clint Rennie and his crew Renee to score third place overall- a vast improvement from the previous year.
Great to see newcomers in the fleet.
Highlights for the regatta had to be the great sailing conditions, the tight racing and collision of the regatta goes to Owen Exler in One 1 Five taking to Phil Smith in Virginia with a full on smack. Not to be out done Phil raced ashore and with duct tape patched a hole of similar size to the one that sunk the titanic and returned to the race course in time to start the next race.
Final results
1st Hall Peppermint Planet
2nd Winters/ Andrews Weapon
3rd Rennie/ Renee Dry Reach
