2002 National Championship

2002a

A high pressure system covered the country and still day greeted all 26 boats lined up for the 2002 Nationals held at Clarks Beach. Officer of the Day, Murray Gallagher, had a hard job on his hands, with very little chance of wind over the next two days.
Competitors in the fleet included current National Champion of the past three seasons Colin and Craig Brocas sailing Icy Red, Lance O ‘Connell , current 3.7m National Champion in Sublime and Roger Hall in Peppermint Planet back from an overseas stint and many other new boats that cam out of the wood work. It was also great to see some female crews amongst the fleet and also some new juniors

Race one
Finally got away in under 5 knots of breeze with Mark Winters, Colin Brocas and Roger Hall leading the fleet. A good start from Steve Andrews also saw him to the fore. Winters sailing Weapon mastered his way through the potholes to win from Brocas with Hall third and then a gap back to Andrews.

Race two
Sailed later in the afternoon started in even lighter conditions. Steve Tennent sailing Wood is Good rose to the occasion having his moment of glory near the front of the fleet with Winters and Brocas. The wind stayed the same with Winters getting the gun again, Tennent second and Brocas 3rd.

The following day was scheduled for four races but the wind gods stayed at home, an amazing mill pond covered the course and after 6 hours of waiting the boats came ashore

Final results
Ist Winters/Andrews Weapon
2nd Brocas/Brocas Icy Red
3rd Tennent/Tennent Wood is Good
