Build your own Jollyboat

There are three options in building a new Jolly

1. Purchase a Full size set of plans from the Jollyboat Class Association. These plans are easily read and comes complete with a building guide to help you build you a true master piece. Contact us here. NB : Printed plans are being replaced May 2010 with a kitset, see 3.

2. Buiild a fibreglass shell and finish it off at home using the Class Association hull mold. This option takes away the need for a building jig and with minimal tools you can put you own wooden decks, cockpit floor and gunwales on. The hull comes with a gel coat so there is no need for painting. The time duration from collecting your hull to having it in the water is approximately 80 hours of work. The bulkheads and deck patterns can be cut from the plywood kitset panels.

3. Build a plywood hull and deck from the Jollyboat kitset. The kitset is 8x sheets of plywood which can be computer cut from nestings by an CNC router company.

After many hours of time plotting patterns and working on the computer models in Maxsurf and Rhino the kitset Jollyboat has emerged and three of these boats have been built to prove the concept. Nested on 8 sheets of plywood the kitset animation above shows the main build stages in the assembly of the framing, keelson and skins. The kitset will be available for anyone to purchase for home construction from the Class Association and a guide on its assembly will be available on this site once the Unitec builds are complete. The kitset has been brought together by the hard work of four individuals after it was proposed at the 2009 AGM. It is hoped that its introduction will stimulate growth in the class by making it really easy for anyone to get the sheets cut by a routing company and build at home.

Due credit for the work goes to Roger Hall who's been responsible for the measurement process for each boat, Simon Paul for the hours put in deciphering the plans and generating the CAD files, Brett 'Merf' Murphy from Unitec for making the offer to build some new boats and getting Unitec's backing and Matt Hall-Smith who regenerated the lines in Maxsurf and pushed the project along.
